‘KONA WINDS’ QUILT TAKES FIRST PLACE AT KONA COFFEE QUILT COMPETITION
KONA, HAWAII’S BIG ISLAND(November 2006)-Dianna Grunhauser from Makawao, Hawaii , took first place at the Kona Coffee Quilting Competition held at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel during the 36th annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival.
Grunhauser’s whimsical winning quilt depicted the colorful beauty of the Big Island that featured Kona coffee trees dotting the landscape. Her entry embellished with glass seed beads and organza was crafted with a combination of hand applique, machine piecing and quilting.
Competing for over $3,500 in cash prizes, quilters participating in the Kona Coffee Quilt Contest had to adhere to the strictest guidelines. The quilt design had to reflect Kona coffee, its industry or multi-cultural coffee heritage and be 40 x 40 inches in size. The panel of judges included Hiroki Morinoue, award-winning Holualoa artist, Diana Foster of Ka Hui Kapa Opana O Waimea and Shigemi Obata, well-known quilter and teacher from Japan.
